The seed for Christian Radio on the Tablelands was planted in late 1998 when a temporary 300 Watt Community Licence was granted to the pioneering team. This was the birth of 92.3 FM. On 11 December 1998 the first general meeting was held for the new radio station, with pioneers Pastor Adem Xhafer, Dr Martin Panter, Mr John Lambourne and Mr Wade Harris present at the meeting. A year later the station was granted a 5 year licence based at 225 Byrnes Street Mareeba under the management of Wade Harris who put together a broadcasting team that included Mr Ian Mc Intosh, Ms Nayet Xhafer and Ms Sarah Xhafer. Training sessions were conducted during this time, and more volunteers joined the team. 99.9 Live FM Townsville supported the station in the early days, helping with music and training. During 2000, grants were received and satellite equipment was purchased which allowed the relaying of Rhema FM (United Christian Broadcasting) programming. In late 2004 the radio transmitter was relocated to Park Ave Mareeba using a windmill tower as an antenna mount. In the ensuing years from 2003 until the present time, there have been 12 licences granted to broadcast Christian radio on the Tablelands. All of these licences were LPON (low powered open narrowcast) which contrasts to 92.3 FM which is a HPON (high powered open narrowcast) Community Licence. When you become a member of 4TVR you are not only supporting 92.3 FM Mareeba, but all of the Vision Radio Network relay stations on the Tablelands. The first Christian Radio station on the Tablelands following Mareeba 92.3 FM in 1998 was Tinaroo 88.0 FM in 2003. This was followed by Yungaburra, Mt Nomico & Ravenshoe transmitting on 88.0 FM in 2004, and Millaa Millaa 88.0 FM and Malanda 87.6 FM in 2005. Atherton (88.0 FM) & Walkamin (87.8 FM) were installed in 2006, while Herberton (88.0 FM) and Tolga (87.8 FM) were switched on in 2007. In 2008 Yungaburra (87.6 FM) and the low power Mareeba 88.0 FM went on the air, the 88.0 FM Mareeba station transmitting from Byrnes Street. Towards the end of 2009, 92.3 FM was blessed to receive some sizeable government funding to purchase updated equipment with new studio and production equipment being purchased and installed by dedicated volunteers in 2010. This has introduced an exciting year of change for 92.3 FM in 2010. Since 7 February 2010, 92.3 FM is once again broadcasting local community content and on 16 March 2010 moved into the new station office and studio in the main street of Mareeba – Level 2 of 143 Byrnes Street (former AMP Building). The 92.3 FM team of volunteers is currently in the process of learning to use the new studio equipment, drafting new policies (for training new volunteers and team members), and working hard at introducing new local community programming. Stay tuned to 92.3 FM for upcoming programs the Mareeba Magazine, Prophecy Today and the new Breakfast Show to be launched soon. Across the Tablelands, 92.3 FM is your local Christian Community radio station. |
